Spring before you apply
Study for the MCAT
Both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools require the MCAT. To hear how other students have prepared, visit our exam tips page.
Write personal statement
For tips on writing your application essay, check out our Personal Statements page.
Request letters of recommendation
Schools vary in their letter of recommendation requirements. Please check with individual schools. We usually recommend 2 letters from science faculty, 1 letter from non-science faculty, and 1 non-academic letter. For tips on how to build relationships with faculty, visit our Letters of Recommendation page.
Summer that you apply
Complete the centralized application
Allopathic schools use a centralized application called AMCAS that opens in May, but you cannot submit the application until June. The AMCAS costs $160 for the first school, and $35 for each additional program.
Osteopathic schools use a centralized application called AACOMAS that opens in May. The AACOMAS costs $195 for the first school, and $35 for each additional program.
The centralized application includes:
- Biographical Information
- Coursework & Transcripts
- Personal Statement
- Work & Volunteer Experiences
- Letters of Recommendation
Complete school-specific secondaries
Medical schools require a secondary application unique to each school. We recommend returning the secondaries two weeks after you receive them.
Interview
Applicant finalists will be asked to participate in interviews. For help preparing for interviews, visit our Interview Preparation page.
